Being locksmiths, we know the entire lingo when it comes to our products, but we understand that most of our neighbors in Albuquerque are experts in other areas instead! So, here is a brief overview of what some of the products are when they are used:
High Security Locks
High security locks are made differently than your basic lock. They are usually bump-proof and very difficult (if not impossible) to pick. Duplicate keys are not as readily available for high security locks, because the keys typically come from the manufacturer and require a signature for duplicates.
Master Key Systems
Master keys can be great for residential or commercial use; think of it as a pyramid. There is one key that operates all of the doors and locks in a certain building or area. However, each individual lock also has its own key, which only works in that specific lock. If one of the individual keys needs to be replaced, the master key will still work, and the other individual keys will not be affected.
Transponders
Newer cars have transponder keys; which means the key “communicates” with the vehicle to decrease the risk of auto theft. The key is ‘verified’ as the right key for the vehicle through the transponder, and the car is allowed to start. Some car manufacturers only offer one transponder key with new cars, but most offer at least two. It is wise to get a duplicate transponder key made if you only presently have one in your possession. If you were to lose all of your transponder keys, our company can program a new one for you, and we offer mobile service to do so. Otherwise, your car will not operate without a transponder key in the ignition.
Mortise Locks
Mortise locks are commonly found on older homes; although they are becoming more popular in certain commercial and residential markets. What makes a mortise lock unique is that the body of the lock is actually fitted into the door, creating a “pocket” for the lock. These types of locks are difficult to install and require the locksmith to use a “mortise jig” which allows precision cutting. It is very important to hire an experienced locksmith to install a mortise lock, as an inexperienced locksmith may end up damaging the door.
Deadbolts
The term “dead” in the term deadbolt lock refers to the fact that no part of the lock is spring based and can not be opened except by means of rotating the actual cylinder with a key. Deadbolts offer an excellent form of secondary security, as a deadbolt can not be forced open by twisting as a door knob may be. Certain brands of deadbolts are jimmy proof, which means they have an extra interlocking bolt system which can not be opened with a screwdriver, and may require unlocking from both the inside and outside.
